In 1983, representatives from a group of local churches and synagogues expressed concern that a number of senior citizens in the Whittier La Mirada and Norwalk area were suffering from malnutrition because inflation was consuming more of their social security dollars than planned. That group organized and started the Interfaith Food Center as a community based food distribution center and began serving thirty (30) low-income families.
